The death toll from a mining accident in Russia rises to 52, including 6 rescuers!

MOSCOW - A total of 52 people, including six rescuers, died in an accident at the Listvyazhnaya coal mine in the Kemerovo Region, Siberia, Russia. This was revealed by a spokesman for the Russian emergency services.

"According to preliminary data, 52 people died, including six rescuers," he said as quoted by Sputnik, Friday (11/26/2021).

Among those killed were members of the rescue team who had responded to the incident.

Officials from the local government previously detailed that about 285 miners were at the site, and about 237 had been successfully evacuated. Governor Sergey Tsivilev at the time indicated that communications with the dozens of people still inside the mine had been cut off.

Earlier a spokesman for the emergency services revealed that from the tally of the injured, two victims had been reported to be in critical condition, with the majority considered moderate or mild severity.

According to Russia's Deputy Attorney General Dmitry Demeshin, preliminary findings establish that the cause of the crash was a methane explosion.

"Most likely, it was a methane explosion caused by some kind of spark. (The explosion) injured people and they couldn't get out," he told reporters, adding that experts from the Russian Investigative Committee were currently investigating the incident.

According to the Investigative Committee, in line with the ongoing criminal investigation, three members of the mine's administration, including its director, first deputy and head of the mine section, have been arrested on charges of violating the industrial safety requirements of hazardous production facilities, resulting in the death of two or more people due to negligence.

The tragedy occurred when coal dust caught fire, causing smoke to devour the mine through the ventilation system, it was reported. Rescue operations have been temporarily suspended due to concerns over gas concentrations at the site.

The mine is owned by SDS-Ugol Holding Company - one of the three largest coal producers in the country.
